St Michael’s Hospice has been providing the highest quality care, free of charge, to the local community for over 35 years. This care is made possible by the generous support of our community who value and respect their hospice.

The Catering Team are involved in every area of the charity.  Not only providing the very best meals to our patients and their families, but also the staff and volunteers who give the care and support.  It doesn’t end there, our fundraising team put on events that need a broad spectrum of catering right up to ‘fine dining’.

In return for your hard work, passion and commitment to St Michael’s and wanting to learn, we will ensure you receive the highest level of instruction and guidance from experienced chefs to set you on your cooking career.

The role:

  • To prepare high-quality, nutritious, safe and enjoyable food for people dining at St Michael’s Hospice (patients, visitors, staff, contractors, supporters, etc) following menus prepared by the Head Chef and ensuring food is delivered on-time, in a safe manner and at the correct temperature.
  • Ensure own compliance with dietary and religious requirements for all patients, staff and visitors.
  • Ensure own compliance with food hygiene, health and safety and infection control within your area and sphere of work in the kitchen, setting high cleaning standards, practices and routines to avoid accidents, food spoilage and waste.
  • Ensure own areas of the kitchen are maintained in a clean, tidy and safe condition.

  • Patient/Customer Focus – put the patient/customer first and work hard to meet patient/customer needs and look after their interests and safety.

  • Resilient – remains calm and self-controlled under pressure. Reacts well to change and stays positive despite setbacks. Keeps difficulties in perspective.
  • Organisation – organises own time effectively and creates own work schedules. Prioritises and prepares in advance. Sets realistic time-scales.

Desired qualifications:

  • GCSE maths and English at grade 4 and above or Functional Skills level 1 and above

If you do not have GCSE grade 4 and above or Functional Skills Level 1 and above in either of these subjects, you will be entered in for Functional Skills including exam during your apprenticeship with us, this is a mandatory part of the apprenticeship training.

Reality check:

  • The role requires long periods on your feet. There is some public transport to the site at Bartestree, but please be aware that weekend work is expected with some shifts finishing at 7.00pm.
