Herefordshire College Celebrates Former Student’s Success

Herefordshire College is celebrating the achievements of former Access to Higher Education student Tori Wilkie, whose dedication and determination have been recognised with a prestigious Academic Scholarship from the University of Worcester.

Tori, a mature student and mum of two from Hereford, completed her Access to Higher Education course at HLNSC before progressing to study Midwifery at the University of Worcester. She has been awarded the scholarship in recognition of her outstanding progress during her time at HLNSC and her successful acceptance onto her degree programme.

Reflecting on the award, Tori said:
“It recognises the hard work I’ve put in while juggling being a mum, studying, and working. It means so much to me to receive this award. It’s such a confidence boost to know that my efforts have been recognised.”

Tori chose the University of Worcester after attending open days where she felt immediately welcomed.
“Worcester has such a good reputation for midwifery, and from the start it just felt like the right fit for me,” she said. “The staff were so friendly and welcoming, which made a lasting impression.”

She also spoke candidly about the personal challenges she has overcome on her journey into higher education.
“My biggest success so far has been having the confidence to start university and settle in somewhere completely new. As someone who’s autistic, big changes and new environments can be quite overwhelming, but I’ve managed to find my feet and start building my confidence.”

Now well into her studies, Tori says she is beginning to feel part of the university community:
“It’s a big step outside my comfort zone, and I’m really glad I took it.”

At the University of Worcester, academic leaders praised the achievements of this year’s scholarship recipients. Professor Sally Moyle, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, commented:
“We are incredibly proud of the students who have received academic scholarships.”

The University’s scholarships and prizes are made possible thanks to generous philanthropists, Honorary Fellows, local employers and successful alumni. Staff have also been raising funds as part of the University’s two-year Anniversaries Campaign, marking 20 years since gaining full university status and 80 years since its founding.

Professor Moyle added:
“These awards demonstrate to potential employers the outstanding achievements of our students, while providing financial support and encouragement for those who’ve earned them.”

Herefordshire College is immensely proud of Tori’s achievements and delighted to see her success recognised at such a high level. Her journey highlights the transformative power of education and the opportunities that Access to Higher Education courses can open for adult learners.
