If you love using commercial sewing patterns to make your own clothes and want to learn more about how to make your own sewing patterns, then this course is for you.
You will learn the basics of pattern drafting and cover a range of skills needed to produce your own patterns. You will learn how to take accurate body measurements and convert those into a basic pattern block. This will then be used to create your own pattern template and to make a calico toile. For the summer term, we will focus on a ‘skirt’ pattern block.
You will develop confidence in understanding how to adjust your toile and pattern pieces to fit properly whilst learning correct pattern marks and terminology. Pattern drafting does have some technical aspects to it as we accurately measure the body and translate those onto our pattern block, but don’t worry as you will be guided through every step of the way.
This course is perfect for beginners who have a basic understanding of using a sewing machine and working with fabrics.
You will need to bring:
Tape measure, paper scissors, masking tape
Ruler, notebook, pen, mechanical pencil, eraser
Dress making curve
Pins, pin wheel
1m of light or medium weight calico
Sewing machines will be provided. In addition, irons, ironing boards, drafting paper, tacking thread and other basic sewing notions will be provided.
