Course content
You will make a range of items using our college sewing machines. Guidance will be given to those not yet confident with a sewing machine. Each week will focus on a specific project as below. Beginners may need to finish their projects at home.
Week 1. Introduction to machine, general sewing and free motion embroidery
Week 2. Rope bag or coasters / table mats
Week 3. Fabric scrap bowl
Week 4. 3D flowers
Weeks 5, 6. Japanese apron
Weeks 7, 8. Cushion cover with added appliqué.
Materials
What to bring with you
Scissors and some sewing thread, including black. For week 1, you will need some fabric scraps or small pieces of fabric, though the tutor will have spare.
For subsequent weeks, you will need to bring scraps of fabric for the 3D flowers and the bowl, fabric for the apron and the cushion cover and a zip for the cushion cover.
You may choose to bring new or recycled fabrics, such as old clothes or bed linen, to use in your projects. The tutor will advise you each week on what is needed.
What the tutor will supply
Spare fabric scraps, fabric stabiliser, glue guns (for 3D flowers), sewing machines, rope for your week 2 project.
About the tutor
Rachel is an experienced textile artist specialising in creating memory-based bespoke art work using free motion embroidery and recycled fabrics. She has exhibited in several galleries and enjoys passing on her passion to others.
Course costs
Tuition fee: £75 (this includes a charge for additional materials of £10)
Additional costs: The fabrics, threads, etc. that you bring will be at your own expense.
