This is not an accredited Sign Language course.
Following this introductory course, learners could progress to further British Sign Language (BSL) courses, including accredited BSL qualifications such as Level 1 and Level 2. Learners may also develop their skills through Deaf awareness courses, community activities and opportunities to practise BSL with others. BSL can support communication in personal, community and workplace settings and may provide a useful foundation for those considering future roles in education, health, social care, customer service or other people-focused professions.
This introductory course will teach the basics of British Sign Language (BSL), including everyday signs, greetings, introductions, numbers, fingerspelling and useful phrases for simple conversations. Learners will develop confidence in understanding and using BSL while exploring Deaf culture, identity and communication.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. It is suitable for complete beginners with no previous knowledge or experience of British Sign Language (BSL). Learners should have an interest in developing their communication skills and be willing to participate in practical signing activities, paired work and group exercises. The course is open to adults of all backgrounds and abilities, with support available to help learners participate fully.
