This course is designed for anyone looking to start a career in construction or related industries. This practical, accessible qualification teaches essential health and safety knowledge and prepares learners to work safely on construction sites.
Through a combination of classroom learning, interactive activities, and practical assessments, you will gain the skills and confidence needed to achieve your CSCS card, a nationally recognised requirement for entry to most construction roles. The course is fully inclusive, with support for learners of all abilities and backgrounds, and equips you with the knowledge to understand workplace safety, follow industry standards, and work effectively as part of a team.
As part of the course you will successfully complete the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touch-screen test and gain the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment—both essential requirements for the CSCS Green Card, valid for five years.
The course will be delivered from the Gateway Adult and Community Education Centre in Shrewsbury.
The course will last for 1 week and will be taught daily between 9.00 and 16.00.

This qualification opens doors to a wide range of opportunities, including:

Learners are also supported with careers advice and progression planning to help them move confidently into work or
further training within the construction sector.
This course covers the essential knowledge and practical understanding needed to work safely and effectively in the
construction industry. You’ll study the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and prepare
for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment touch-screen test, leading to achievement of the CSCS Green Card (valid
for five years).
Topics include:
· Understanding health, safety, and welfare in construction
· Identifying workplace hazards and safe working practices
· Roles and responsibilities on-site
· Working safely around tools, equipment, and vehicles
· Understanding risk assessments and accident prevention
· Rights, responsibilities, and environmental awareness
You’ll also take part in interactive lessons, discussions, and practical activities designed to build your confidence and prepare you for real-world site work.
Assessment is practical, supportive, and designed to help every learner succeed. You will complete a series of written
activities to assess your understanding of Health and Safety and Employability Skills, demonstrating your
understanding of essential principles.
You’ll then take the CITB Health, Safety and Environment touch-screen test, which, alongside your Level 1
qualification, allows you to apply for the CSCS Green Card (valid for five years).
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
You should have a keen interest in construction and be willing to learn about safe working practices. A basic level of
English and maths is helpful to support understanding of the course content and completion of the multiple-choice
assessments, but additional support is available if needed.
