About the course

The Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Computing (Cyber Security) provides a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the computing and cyber security sector. The course prepares students for employment in roles such as system management, networking, software development and game design. Units contain a balance of theory and practical skills. Everything we deliver has been verified by industry and local employers to ensure we are delivering what is required in your future careers. Students will learn how to programme through the use of programming languages such as C#, Java, and Python. With units focused on IT security and cyber security, we dive into setting up secure systems, which are equipped to deal with the threats found in today’s digital world.

On successful completion of the Higher National Certificate (120 credits) you could move onto your next stage of higher education, you could enrol on our Higher National Diploma for a further 120 credits.

Assessment methods

Assessment takes place using a variety of methods including assignments, presentations, projects, and case studies. Many assessments will be based on the application of knowledge and skills obtained in the computing lab. All students will receive regular feedback on their work and progress from their tutors. The qualification will be graded at pass, merit and distinction.

Entry requirements

To be considered for our Higher National Certificate in Computing (Cyber Security):

Passes at grade C or above in two or more A Levels (80 UCAS tariff points) in relevant subjects, or a relevant Level 3 vocational qualification with a minimum of a Merit grade

Mature students will be assessed on relevant experience

All students will be admitted on their ability to benefit from study at this level and their intellectual capacity and motivation to succeed.

Students will need to show evidence of capability in English, certified achievement at CEFR B2 or above, including (but not limited to):

  • IELTS (Academic or General Training): overall score 5.5 or above

  • Pearson PTE Academic: overall score 51 or above

  • TOEFL iBT: overall score 72 or above

  • Cambridge English Qualifications: B2 First (FCE) – Pass (Cambridge English Scale 160+)

  • GCSE English Language Grade 3+

  • or another externally assessed recognised English Language qualification explicitly benchmarked to CEFR B2.
