About the course

A Farrier is a skilled professional, equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to support the welfare and wellbeing of equines through the shoeing and trimming of equine feet. Farriers must be good problem solvers and communicators, with the ability to work individually and as part of a team to discuss, develop and deliver a foot care plan tailored to the individual needs of an equine. This apprenticeship is designed to deliver the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to achieve the Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma, join the Register of Qualified Farriers and practise as a qualified farrier in the UK. Our alumni are also offered the opportunity to receive a travel scholarship to work abroad as an equine welfare volunteer.

What qualification will I gain?

  • Level 3 Farriery Apprenticeship Standard and leading to the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers (Dip WCF).

What you could do next

Train apprentices as Approved Training Farrier. Higher qualification with the Worshipful Company of the Farriers, the AWCF and FWCF or research within the GradDipELR(RVC) and BSc (Hons)

Entry requirements

  • Suitable employment on or prior to starting the apprenticeship training programme with an Approved Training Farrier (ATF).

  • An appropriate level of maths and English (assessed prior to apprenticeship start)

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above including maths, English and at least one science (this is a FRC requirement).
