After completing Functional Skills Maths, learners can progress to the next Functional Skills level, GCSE Mathematics, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, or higher-level training programmes.

Functional Skills Maths also helps learners meet entry requirements for many courses, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

Level 2 Functional Skills Maths is widely recognised by employers and training providers as an equivalent qualification to GCSE Maths Grade 4 (C).

Key facts

The City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualification is available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 and develops practical

mathematical skills for everyday life, work and study.

Learners cover 4 key skill areas: Using Numbers and the Number System, Measures, Shape and Space, and Handling

Information and Data.

At Entry Levels, learners build confidence with basic calculations, money, time and simple data.

At Level 1 and Level 2, learners develop skills in problem-solving, percentages, ratios, budgeting, interpreting charts

and graphs, measuring, and applying mathematical reasoning to real-life situations.

Learning is practical, relevant and focused on applying maths confidently in a range of contexts.

Assessment methods

Entry levels are assessed via classroom based, externally set exams that are marked by the course tutor. Level 1 and 2

exams are externally set and marked by independent examiners. Exams can be taken online or written.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the course.

Tutors will provide initial advice and guidance, as well as a short initial assessment to determine the level of study that

is right for you. If you have any existing Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications in maths, please bring these with you

to you first meeting with the course tutor.
