All students must complete two core units:
Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
Presenting a professional image in a salon
These units give a foundation: an overview of the hair and beauty industry, how salons work, and the standards expected regarding professional appearance and conduct.
You will then study a selection of units from the list below:
Hand care
Skin care
Nail art application
Shampooing (shampoo and conditioning)
Basic make-up application and face painting
Women’s hair styling

Health and safety in a salon
The structure gives you foundational knowledge plus flexibility to build skills relevant to your interests — whether that’s hairdressing, beauty therapy, nails, make-up or a mix. You get hands-on practice (e.g. styling hair, skin and nail treatments, shampooing, make-up), understand professional salon practices (health & safety, professional image), and gain enough breadth to decide which pathway you want to specialise in when you move on to Level 2 or an apprenticeship.
The qualification is assessed through a combination of practical assessments, written knowledge checks, and portfolio evidence. Learners must demonstrate both practical competence and understanding of the theory behind each unit.
This course has no specific formal entry requirements but you must be able to demostrate an ability to speak, listen, read and write in English at Entry Level 3 as a minimum.
