About the course

An auto-care technician carries out services and repairs to cars, car-derived vans and light goods vehicles, using a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment. The role requires a unique combination of technical, retail, customer service and problem-solving skills.

What qualification will I gain?

  • A certificate of completion from the Institute for Apprenticeships.

  • Level 2 qualification for safe isolation of electric and hybrid vehicles

  • Level 3 qualification for F-Gas handler for air-conditioning in motor vehicles in accordance with (EU) 517/2014 regulations (or an equivalent qualification that a European Union (EU) member state recognises)

Assessment methods

All apprentices will complete an End Point Assessment, which will consist of a practical assessment with questions and an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Entry requirements

  • Suitable employment on or prior to starting the apprenticeship training programme.

  • An appropriate level of maths and English (assessed prior to apprenticeship start)

  • Apprentices without English or maths (at Level 2 for a Level 3 Apprenticeship or Level 1 for a Level 2 Apprenticeship) must achieve this prior to taking the End Point Assessment).

  • We can support you to achieve the desired level of maths and English, through functional skills taught sessions which are mandatory to attend as part of your programme (you cannot achieve your apprenticeship without the required level of maths and English).
