Meet Your Tutor: Naomi Andersson

If you ask Naomi, learning doesn’t stop when the college day ends. Whether she’s testing the health of local rivers, growing vegetables, mastering a new craft or exploring the outdoors, Naomi’s curiosity and enthusiasm for the world around her are at the heart of everything she does.

At Ludlow Sixth Form College, Naomi teaches A Level Geography and Politics. Before moving into education, she enjoyed a varied and successful career across several industries. In the 1990s, she worked for the first company in the world to create maps for satellite navigation systems before progressing into digital mapping. She later ran her own award-winning e-commerce and marketing consultancy before becoming Head of Marketing for a solar installation company. In 2013, she joined HLNSC to teach Marketing and now teaches Geography and Politics.

Naomi’s passion for Geography began during her studies for a BSc (Hons) in Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Surrey. She particularly loved fieldwork, remote sensing and physical geography, developing a fascination with how people and the environment interact. Today, she remains actively involved in the subject as a member of the Geography Association’s Post-16 FE/HE Committee and supports Friends of the Wye through water-testing projects.

Outside the classroom, Naomi has an impressive list of hobbies and interests. She grows her own vegetables, is passionate about soil health, enjoys knitting, crochet, cooking and preserving produce, and has recently taken up flower arranging. Her home is also full of plants, many of which she happily gives away to others. Add in walking, line dancing, yoga and regular weight training, and it’s safe to say Naomi prefers an active life outdoors whenever possible.

Fun fact: Naomi chose her university because of its amazing Geography field trips to Iceland and the Caribbean. Unfortunately, those trips stopped the year she arrived! Determined not to miss out, she wrote to the Head of Department to complain. While she eventually got to visit Malta twice and didn’t make it to Iceland until she was 40, she’s still waiting for her first trip to the Caribbean. In the meantime, she’s become something of an expert on Maltese limestone pavement!
