Meet Your Tutor: Victoria Small

Victoria strongly believes that maths is far more than numbers on a page. It’s a way of understanding the universe, solving fascinating puzzles and exploring some of the biggest questions in science.

With her enthusiasm for mathematics, fascination with the cosmos and love of lifelong learning, Victoria encourages students to embrace challenges, think creatively and discover just how exciting maths can be.

At Ludlow Sixth Form College, Victoria teaches A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics, helping students build confidence in complex concepts while developing the logical thinking skills that make maths such a powerful subject.

Victoria’s passion for mathematics began during her own studies, where she completed A Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics before going on to study Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. One area she particularly enjoyed was learning how scientists discover exoplanets, planets orbiting stars beyond our solar system, and the methods used to determine whether they might be capable of supporting life. The combination of mathematics, physics and discovery continues to inspire her today.

Before joining HLNSC, Victoria worked in a variety of roles, including within mental health services. These experiences have given her a broad perspective and reinforced her belief in the importance of resilience, problem-solving and supporting others to achieve their goals.

Outside the classroom, Victoria’s love of maths never really switches off. She enjoys tackling logic puzzles and listening to non-fiction audiobooks, particularly those exploring mathematics, physics and our understanding of the universe. She has also been fortunate enough to experience some incredible scientific opportunities along the way.

One of the highlights was visiting CERN during her final year of school, before experiments began at the world-famous particle physics laboratory. During the visit, she had the rare opportunity to go underground and see two of the enormous particle detectors up close, an experience that further fuelled her fascination with science.

Fun fact: In August 2026, Victoria was lucky enough to witness a total solar eclipse from the west coast of Iceland, a truly unforgettable experience for someone with a passion for astronomy.
