These ESOL enrichment courses (Reading and Discussion or ESOL and Culture) are non-accredited learning
programmes, meaning they do not lead to a formal qualification. Instead, they focus on informal, flexible learning
designed to build confidence and improve practical English skills in a supportive environment.
The emphasis is on personal development, communication skills, and community engagement rather than
certification. These courses also provide a useful stepping stone into accredited ESOL Skills for Life qualifications at
Entry Level through to Level 2.
After completing ESOL enrichment courses such as Reading and Discussion or ESOL and Culture, learners can progress
onto accredited ESOL Skills for Life qualifications from Entry Level through to Level 2. These provide formal
recognition of English language skills and support further academic or vocational study.
Learners may also move into Functional Skills English, vocational courses such as Health and Social Care or Customer
Service, or other community learning opportunities. The skills gained also support improved confidence for
employment, volunteering, and everyday life in the UK, helping learners become more independent and engaged in
their local community.
Reading and Discussion focuses on developing English language skills through engaging with a variety of texts, such as
articles, short stories, and real-life materials. Learners build reading comprehension, vocabulary, and inference skills,
then develop confidence in speaking through guided discussions, sharing opinions, and responding to ideas in a
supportive group setting.
ESOL and Culture explores English language development through themes related to British life, global cultures,
traditions, and everyday experiences. Learners improve speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary while discussing
cultural topics, customs, and community life.
Both courses emphasise practical communication, confidence-building, and interactive learning to support real-world
language use.
Assessment for both ESOL enrichment courses is informal and ongoing, focusing on participation, engagement, and individual progress rather than formal examinations. Tutors use observation, questioning, group discussion, and learner feedback to monitor development in speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary use.
Entry requirements for ESOL enrichment courses such as Reading and Discussion or ESOL and Culture are flexible and
inclusive. There are no formal qualifications needed to enrol.
Courses are suitable for adult learners whose first language is not English and who want to improve their confidence
in speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary through informal, topic-based learning.
Learners will complete a short initial assessment to ensure the course is appropriate for their level. A willingness to
participate in group activities, communicate with others, and engage with English in everyday contexts is the main
requirement.
