SHORT COURSES
Whether you are learning Spanish for travel, work, personal interest or to connect with Spanish-speaking communities, this non-accredited course offers a supportive and enjoyable way to develop your language skills. Classes are available at beginner, intermediate and conversational levels, allowing you to study at a pace that suits your experience. You will build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing through practical, real-life situations and interactive activities. The course also explores aspects of Spanish culture and traditions, helping you gain a broader understanding of the language while improving your communication skills in a friendly adult learning environment.
Classes run at the Gateway Adult and Community Education Centre, Shrewsbury, as below:
Improvers – Wednesday 9.30 -11.00 This class is suitable for learners who already have some basic knowledge of the language and want to build on existing skills rather than start from scratch.
Intermediate – Wednesday 11.30 – 1.00 This class is suitable for learners who can already communicate confidently in a range of everyday situations and are ready to develop greater fluency, accuracy, and independence in the language.
Conversation – Wednesday 14.00-15.30 This class is suitable for learners who are confident in Spanish speaking and listening and wish to develop their skills further in the context of wider Spanish culture.
This is a non-accredited adult learning course and does not lead to a formal qualification. You will receive a college
certificate in recognition of the skills you develop throughout this course.
After completing this course, you could progress to a higher-level Spanish class, moving from beginner to intermediate or from intermediate to conversational Spanish. You may choose to continue developing your language skills through further adult learning courses, independent study or language exchange groups. Improved Spanish language skills can enhance travel experiences, support personal and professional development, and help you communicate more confidently with Spanish speakers. Many learners continue their studies term after term to build fluency, deepen their cultural understanding and enjoy the social benefits of lifelong learning.
Throughout the course, learners will build vocabulary, improve pronunciation, develop listening comprehension and
explore key grammatical structures through real-life communication activities. Cultural themes, including Spanish and
Latin American traditions, festivals and customs, are integrated to provide context and enrich learning. Interactive
tasks, discussions, role plays, multimedia resources and colloquial language help learners communicate more
naturally and confidently while enjoying the social benefits of language learning.
As this is a non-accredited course, assessment is informal, supportive and designed to help learners recognise their
progress and build confidence. Throughout the course, tutors will assess learning through observation of speaking and
listening activities, participation in discussions, reading and listening comprehension tasks, short written exercises and
questioning during lessons. Learners will also benefit from peer interaction, feedback and regular recap activities to
reinforce learning. Progress is celebrated through practical communication tasks, group activities and an end-of-term
quiz, with no formal examinations required.
There are no formal entry requirements for this non-accredited course. Learners should enrol on the level that best
matches their existing knowledge and experience of Spanish. Beginners require no previous study of the language,
while intermediate and conversational learners should have some prior knowledge and be able to participate in basic
Spanish conversations. A willingness to engage in speaking, listening and group activities is recommended. If you are
unsure which level is most suitable, our team will be happy to discuss your experience and help you choose the right
class through an informal assessment of your existing knowledge and fluency of Spanish.
