Student success story: Zakia’s progresses to university to pursue her passion for medical science

From studying Access to Higher Education Health and Social Care at Herefordshire College to taking the next step at the University of Worcester, Zakia journey highlights how the right support can help students build confidence and achieve their ambitions.

Zakia studied the Access to Higher Education Health and Social Care course at Herefordshire College, where she developed her knowledge of healthcare, strengthened her academic skills and prepared for the next stage of her education.

Now studying Medical Science with Foundation Year at the University of Worcester, Zakia is working towards her future in the medical and healthcare field.

During her time at Herefordshire College, Zakia particularly enjoyed learning about the human body, health and the ways in which healthcare supports people.

Alongside developing her subject knowledge, the course helped her build confidence, improve her academic skills and become a more independent learner, which is all valuable preparation for university.

Zakia describes her experience at the College as positive, highlighting the friendly learning environment and the support she received from tutors and staff throughout her studies.

“The tutors and staff were always helpful and guided me through the application process whenever I needed support,” she said.

This support also extended to her UCAS application, helping Zakia navigate the process of applying to university and feel prepared for the transition to higher education.

Supportive tutors who make a difference

For Zakia, the encouragement she received from her tutors played an important role in her college experience.

She describes them as approachable, supportive and always willing to help when she had questions or needed guidance. Their encouragement helped her believe in herself while continuing to develop the academic skills needed for the next stage of her education.

Zakia believes this supportive atmosphere is one of the reasons prospective students should consider Herefordshire College.

“The tutors and staff are helpful and genuinely care about students’ progress,” she said.

Taking the next step at university

Zakia’s Access to Higher Education course provided a pathway to university, giving her the opportunity to progress academically and work towards her long-term ambitions.

She recommends the course to anyone interested in healthcare who wants to progress to university, particularly because of the knowledge and transferable skills it develops.

The course strengthened her understanding of health and social care while helping her improve her research, writing and independent learning skills.

Now at the University of Worcester, Zakia hopes to continue developing her knowledge and skills in medical science and healthcare as she works towards her career goals.

Reflecting on her journey from college to university, Zakia has an encouraging message for anyone considering their next steps in education.

“My advice to other students would be to always work hard and never give up on your dreams,” she said.

“There may be challenges and obstacles along the way, but they should not stop you from believing in yourself and working towards your goals.”

Her experience is a reminder that determination, hard work and the right support can help students move forward and achieve things that may once have seemed difficult.
