Luca began his Level 2 Barbering Apprenticeship in August 2025. Although he joined slightly later than others, he quickly settled into college life and has fully embraced both the learning and workplace elements of his course.
“I’m loving it so far,” Luca says. “It’s going great. I really enjoy the social side of barbering. Getting to chat with clients feels really natural and relaxed, cutting hair almost feels like a bonus.”
Kelly Crowther, his assessor, added, “Luca has developed exceptional practical skills since joining us. He listens to feedback and works hard to improve constantly. Alongside this, he is the most organised Barber we have ever had with his theory work and has passed all theory tests to date first time!”
Finding the Right Career Path
Luca discovered his passion for barbering through cutting his own hair and soon realised he could turn this interest into a career. He chose the apprenticeship route because it offered real workplace experience alongside his training.
“I didn’t want to make the financial investment of paying for a course when apprenticeships give you the chance to earn, learn and gain real industry experience at the same time,” he explains. “I know people who have taken full-time courses and can cut hair, but they haven’t had the experience of working in a real barbershop or learning how to look after clients. The apprenticeship has given me both.”
Luca particularly values the balance between college learning and workplace training.
“Having one day a week in college works really well for me. It’s manageable and fits my learning style perfectly. I get to develop my technical skills in college and then build my confidence by applying them in the barbershop.”
Personal Growth
Since starting his apprenticeship, Luca has noticed significant personal development, especially in his communication and confidence.
“In school, I was very different and quite nervous around people. At college, I feel really supported as an individual. The apprenticeship has helped me build my social skills massively and I’ve grown a lot as a person.”
Luca credits both his college tutors and workplace mentors for supporting his progress.
“At my employer’s shop, Jake has been incredible. He’s taught me so much and really supports me day-to-day in the workplace. At college, Kelly is always helping me stay on top of my coursework and paperwork, which I’m not the best at! Lou has been brilliant in helping me develop my practical skills, especially techniques like blow-drying and styling.”
Future Plans
Luca already has clear career plans and hopes to remain with his employer once he completes his apprenticeship.
“I want to stay where I am and continue building my clientele and developing my skills. I’m not in a rush to move on. I want to keep learning, refining my techniques and becoming the best barber I can be.”
Advice for Future Apprentices
Luca encourages anyone considering barbering to stay committed and patient as they develop their skills.
“Be resilient. As an apprentice, you’re not going to live the best barber lifestyle straight away, but if you stay persistent and keep learning, it’s worth it. Never get complacent. There is always something new to learn.”
Inspiration and Favourite Styles
Luca particularly enjoys creating Blow Out Taper cuts.
“They always look clean and sharp. You can style them to look extremely smart. If you want a fresh, polished look, that’s the cut to ask for.”
Outside of his training, Luca draws inspiration from well-known barber and content creator Marty Blendz, whose precision, creativity and client interaction style continue to influence Luca’s own approach to barbering.
