Farm Worker Apprentice

Apprenticeship Level: 2
Organisation: Sheepcote Farm

The Dairy at Sheepcote Farm was built in 2022 and is a family run business.  They milk approximately 650 spring calving cows on a 60 head rotary parlour. Their calves are all Beef crosses and sold within the first 6 weeks of life.

Sheepcote Farm grow nearly all of their own forage, mostly grass silage and maize, and they also do the bulk of the field work themselves. The farm has an energetic, friendly and hard working team and they are looking for someone to fit into that.

The role:

  • Assist with milking cows using milking machines, ensuring hygiene and comfort standards are met.
  • Monitor cow health and behaviour; report signs of illness, lameness, or injury to the Herd Manager.
  • Feed and water the herd, ensuring correct rations.
  • Clean milking parlours, housing areas, and feeding equipment to maintain high hygiene standards.
  • Handle young stock and assist with rearing calves.
  • Maintain accurate herd records (milking, health, breeding, etc.).
  • Operate farm machinery safely as needed (e.g., tractors, feeders).
  • Follow all farm safety and biosecurity protocols.

Desired skills:

  • Previous experience working with dairy cows preferred but not essential (training provided).
  • Basic knowledge of livestock health and welfare.
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • A genuine interest in animal welfare and the dairy industry.

Desired personal qualities:

  • Enjoy working with animals – You should like being around cows and caring for them.
  • Hardworking – Be ready for early mornings and long, physical days.
  • Reliable – Show up on time and do what’s expected every day.
  • Willing to learn – You don’t need to know everything, but you must be open to learning.
  • Good team player – Work well with others and have a positive attitude.
  • Pay attention – Notice if an animal seems sick or something isn’t right.
  • Follow rules – Keep things clean and safe for you and the animals.
  • Stay strong in all weather – Be prepared to work in the rain, cold, or heat.

Desired qualifications:

  • GCSE grade 1-3 in English and maths

Reality check:

  • Early Mornings and Long Days – Cows need to be milked early and again in the afternoon or evening. There are no breaks for weekends or holidays. Expect to work long hours, especially during busy seasons like calving.
  • Physically Demanding – You’ll be on your feet most of the day, lifting, bending, and working with heavy equipment or animals.
  • All-Weather Job – Rain, snow, heat—you’ll be outside or in barns no matter the weather. Mud and manure are daily realities.
  • Dealing with Animals – Cows are large animals. They can kick, step on you, or be unpredictable. You’ll need to stay alert and respectful of their size and behaviour.
