Organisation: The Tortworth Estate

The Tortworth Estate is a traditional rural Estate extending to approximately 4,500 acres situated near Wotton-Under-Edge on the border between Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire. The Estate’s property portfolio includes farmland, woodland, quarries, 70 houses, four holiday cottages and 12 commercial premises.

An important part of the Estate is the 500 acres of forestry which are managed with a balance of commerciality and environmental considerations. The Estate also has a Christmas Tree enterprise and a small firewood business.

The Estate require an enthusiastic Forestry Apprentice to join their team and learn the practical skills needed to help create, maintain and manage woodlands. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, is keen to learn, and wants to build a long-term career in forestry, land management or conservation.

The role:

  • Assist with tree planting, woodland creation and restocking work
  • Support woodland maintenance, including weeding, pruning, beating up and vegetation management
  • Help install and maintain fencing, gates, tree guards and other farm and woodland infrastructure
  • Support habitat improvement, conservation tasks and protection of woodland features
  • Assist with basic tree and woodland inspections under supervision
  • Learn safe working practices for tools, machinery and forestry equipment
  • Work effectively as part of a small team and follow instructions from supervisors
  • Maintain a tidy, safe and professional working environment

  • Enjoys practical outdoor work in all seasons
  • An interest in trees, woodland, wildlife, conservation or rural work
  • Punctual, dependable and willing to learn
  • Can work safely and follow instructions
  • Works well with others

You do not need previous forestry experience, but you should have a genuine interest in working outdoors and learning practical countryside skills

Desired qualifications:

  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above

Reality check:

  • Working additional hours at other times and on weekends may be required from time to time, but this is unusual.
