Returning to education after fifteen years away wasn’t something Emma ever imagined she would do, but it turned out to be one of the most empowering decisions she’s made.
After completing university, Emma spent seven years working as a class teacher before dedicating the next fifteen years to being a full-time mum to her twins. As her children approached the end of their school years, she felt ready to focus on herself again and pursue a new professional direction.
“I knew it was the right time to start thinking about my next chapter,” Emma explains. She began with a Level 1 counselling evening course and has since progressed all the way through to Level 5, building her knowledge, confidence and professional experience along the way.
For Emma, the most important lesson she learned at college wasn’t just academic, it was also very personal.
Balancing family life with the challenges of studying after many years away from education initially felt daunting. However, the encouragement and guidance she received from tutors, peers and placement providers helped her realise she was capable of far more than she had believed.
“I’ve grown in confidence and realised that growth can happen at any stage in life.”
Although Emma enjoyed every aspect of the course, the child-focused content was a particular highlight, allowing her to build on her previous experience as a teacher. However, it was the personal development work that had the greatest impact.
“The work I’ve done on myself through personal development sessions and counselling has strengthened my self-awareness, increased my confidence and helped me grow both personally and professionally.”
The course not only prepared her for a new career but also helped her reconnect with herself after years focused on raising her family.
“I feel more grounded, more capable and ready to move forward.”
Support from Tutors
Emma credits much of her success to the dedication and encouragement of her tutors.
She describes Will Shone, who taught her at Level 1, as inspiring from the very beginning. His gentle, person-centred approach created a calm and safe learning environment at a time when she felt nervous and unsure.
Lucia McAuliffe also played a pivotal role throughout Emma’s journey. Emma describes her teaching as engaging and dynamic, bringing clarity and energy to complex topics. Lucia’s ability to combine professionalism with warmth significantly strengthened Emma’s confidence and motivation.
“The tutors are knowledgeable, approachable and genuinely committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.”
Emma highly recommends Herefordshire College to others considering higher education, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere and strong student support systems.
She also benefited from access to The Hive through the college’s partnership with the University of Worcester, praising its exceptional library services, quiet study spaces and knowledgeable staff. In addition, the IT support team provided invaluable assistance, helping her navigate any technical challenges with patience and expertise.
Advice to Others
“I would definitely recommend this course to others as it has absolutely changed my life.”
Through the Foundation Diploma in Counselling, Emma developed deep self-awareness, rebuilt her confidence and found the belief and direction she needed to move forward in her career.
Her advice to future students?
“Embrace it fully. Ask questions, get involved and don’t be afraid to seek support. You truly get out of the course what you put in.”
