About the course

BSL Level 1 teaches you how this language is structured and supports you in learning to communicate with the Deaf community in BSL. You will develop an understanding of grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills to enable you to use and understand basic BSL.

Whether you want to support and communicate with a Deaf family member, friend or colleague or simply to learn a new skill, this course equips you with the tools to engage confidently in basic BSL conversations.

You will cover a range of themes that involve simple, everyday language use. You will learn to use appropriate facial expressions and gestures to enhance your communication. To make good progress, you will need to do some homework and to practice your new skills outside the classroom. Topics will include:

  • Animals and Objects

  • Describing People

  • Directions

  • Food and Drink

  • Interest and Activities

  • Meeting People

  • Sharing Information

  • Transport

  • Using Numbers

  • Weather

The course is divided into three units, as stipulated by the awarding body, Signature:

BSL101 Introduction to BSL

Assessed by your tutor via a basic conversation

BSL102 Conversational BSL

Assessed by a Signature assessor via a 4-5 minute conversation

BSL103 Communication in BSL about everyday life

Assessed by a Signature assessor via a 4-5 minute conversation

Key facts

Tuition fee: £650 (please note there is no fee remission available for this course, however, it is possible to pay by instalments).

In addition, you will need to pay for each of the assessments:

  • BSL101 Assessment: £20

  • BSL102 Assessment: £44

  • BSL103 Assessment: £44

This course lasts for 32 weeks:

  • Term 1 – 16th September to 9th December 2025

  • Term 2 – 6th January to 24th March 2026

  • Term 3 – 14th April to 30th June 2026

Dates: 16th September 2025 to 30th June 2026 (no classes during school holidays)

Day/Time: Tuesday evenings, 6.00 to 8.00pm

Assessments £20 + £42 + £42 (payable prior to each assessment)

Assessment methods

The course will start with BSL101. Once you have achieved this unit, you will have the option of taking the assessments for BSL102 and BSL103.

You can choose whether to take the assessment at the end of each unit or whether to study without taking the assessments. You need to pass all three assessments to achieve a BSL Level 1 qualification.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL

  • Take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL

  • Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL

  • Give and follow simple, familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, though completion of our BSL & Deaf Awareness short course would be an advantage.

Please note that BSL competence standards stipulate that learners need to have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, and facial and body movements to produce and receive BSL.
