PART-TIME COURSES
Functional Skills Maths is a practical qualification designed to help you develop the mathematical skills needed for everyday life, work and further study. Available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2, the course builds confidence in using maths to solve real-life problems, manage finances, interpret information and make informed decisions. You will learn through practical activities and relevant scenarios, making maths accessible and useful. Whether you want to improve your employment prospects, progress to further qualifications, support your studies, or increase your confidence with numbers, this course provides valuable skills recognised by employers and education providers.
The course is available at different levels to suit your starting point and goals. Classes run across several campuses and at varied times to suit your needs:
North Shropshire College (Oswestry) – Monday evening – 6pm-8pm
North Shropshire College (Oswestry) – Tuesday morning – 9.30am-11.30am
North Shropshire College (Oswestry) – Thursday morning – 9.30am-11.30am
Gateway Adult Education Centre (Shrewsbury) – Thursday morning – 10.00am-12.00pm
Ludlow Sixth Form College – Friday morning – 9.30am-11.30am
The course is accredited by City and Guilds and you will receive a qualification in Functional Skills Mathematics from
Entry level 1 to Level 2, depending on your level of study.
After completing Functional Skills Maths, learners can progress to the next Functional Skills level, GCSE Mathematics, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, or higher-level training programmes.
The qualification supports progression into a wide range of careers and sectors, including health and social care, education, business, construction, engineering, logistics and retail. Functional Skills Maths also helps learners meet entry requirements for many courses, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.
Achieving Level 2 can enhance career prospects, support further study and improve confidence in managing personal finances, problem-solving and using mathematical skills effectively in everyday life and the workplace. Level 2 Functional Skills Maths is widely recognised by employers and training providers as an equivalent qualification to GCSE Maths Grade 4 (C).

The City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualification is available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 and develops practical
mathematical skills for everyday life, work and study.
Learners cover 4 key skill areas: Using Numbers and the Number System, Measures, Shape and Space, and Handling
Information and Data.
At Entry Levels, learners build confidence with basic calculations, money, time and simple data.
At Level 1 and Level 2, learners develop skills in problem-solving, percentages, ratios, budgeting, interpreting charts
and graphs, measuring, and applying mathematical reasoning to real-life situations.
Learning is practical, relevant and focused on applying maths confidently in a range of contexts.
Entry levels are assessed via classroom based, externally set exams that are marked by the course tutor. Level 1 and 2
exams are externally set and marked by independent examiners. Exams can be taken online or written.
There are no formal entry requirements for the course.
Tutors will provide initial advice and guidance, as well as a short initial assessment to determine the level of study that
is right for you. If you have any existing Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications in maths, please bring these with you
to you first meeting with the course tutor
