Animal Management Lecturer Amy Morton has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award following the publication of her article in the Veterinary Nursing Journal.
Amy, who teaches Animal Management, T Level and 2nd year, at Holme Lacy College, is one of just two finalists for the BVNA Veterinary Nursing Journal Writer of the Year Award 2026.
The award recognises articles that have encouraged discussion, driven positive change or improved clinical standards within the veterinary profession.
Amy received the nomination for her article, The Importance of Quality-of-Life Assessments for Senior Patients, which was published in the Veterinary Nursing Journal and explores the role of quality-of-life assessments in caring for ageing animals and supporting owners through end-of-life decisions.
The nomination praised the article for its compassionate and practical approach, highlighting how it helps veterinary professionals support both animals and their families during some of the most challenging stages of pet ownership.
Commenting on the nomination, Amy said:
“I was delighted and completely surprised to learn that I had been shortlisted for this award. Writing the article gave me the opportunity to explore an area of veterinary nursing that is incredibly important, both professionally and personally. It’s wonderful to know that it has resonated with readers and contributed to conversations around supporting senior pets and their owners.”
The article examines how veterinary teams can assess and monitor an animal’s wellbeing, while also recognising the emotional impact that serious illness and end-of-life care can have on families. It provides practical guidance for veterinary professionals and advocates for compassionate, patient-centred care.
Amy’s achievement reflects the depth of industry expertise within Holme Lacy College’s Animal Management team, ensuring students benefit from learning alongside professionals who continue to contribute to developments within their sector.
The winner of the BVNA Veterinary Nursing Journal Writer of the Year Award 2026 will be announced at the BVNA Congress Awards Ceremony in October.
