Domi is currently studying AAT Level 4 at Herefordshire College and is hopeful to graduate in Hereford Cathedral later on this year. Having progressed from AAT Level 2 to Level 3 and now Level 4, her journey has been one of personal and professional growth.
“I’ve really enjoyed the course,” Domi says. “I’ve definitely felt it step up at Level 4, but I’m enjoying the challenge. It’s an industry I want to stay in, so the hard work will be worth it.”
Like many students, Domi’s journey wasn’t entirely straightforward. After leaving school during the COVID-19 pandemic, she initially applied to study Travel & Tourism at college. However, due to the uncertainty of the time and not enjoying the working-from-home experience, she decided to take a gap year instead. During this period, she worked at a tanning salon between lockdowns, though business was understandably quiet.
When she returned to college, Domi enrolled on a Business Studies course, which she studied for two years. Alongside her studies, she worked part-time at Aconbury Sprouts. As part of her Business course, she was also required to complete work experience, which she was successful in obtaining with accountancy firm, Cole & Co. This was an opportunity that would shape her future career.
After finishing Business Studies, she progressed onto AAT Level 2 and secured an apprenticeship with Cole & Co.
“They supported me by giving me the opportunity to undertake work experience in an industry I wasn’t previously familiar with, and then offered me an apprenticeship, which worked out really well.”
Professional and Personal Growth
Domi speaks highly of her time at Herefordshire College, particularly the supportive learning environment and strong relationships with tutors.
“I have great relationships with the tutors, even the ones who taught me during my Business Studies course. It’s been a while now, but they still care about how I’m doing and it’s lovely to be able to update them.”
As an adult learner who has progressed continuously through her studies, Domi describes the transition between courses as seamless.
“I don’t feel any older than anyone else walking around. I’m just really comfortable here and in myself. The environment is welcoming and inclusive, and I’ve grown a lot in my confidence.”
She reflects on how much she has developed since starting at the College at 17.
“I was very much a teenager when I first started here! I’ve come a long way, not just professionally but personally too. I’ve learned so much from my teachers and from other students.”
Currently, Domi attends college one day per week while working four days in her accountancy role.
“That balance works really well for me. I’m earning money, gaining hands-on experience, and still learning at college. I’m developing in both environments, and it’s a great mix.”
She has also built lasting friendships during her time at college.
“I’ve made some great friends. I’m meeting up soon with my Business group, which is lovely, and I’ve also made new friends on the AAT course. I hope we’ll stay in touch too.”
Future Plans
After completing AAT Level 4, Domi hopes to continue her studies with ACCA while remaining with her current employer.
“It’s funny where I’ve ended up because I’ve never really loved numbers! When I finished Business, I felt a bit stuck about what to do next. My tutors were amazing, they talked me through all my options, different industries and scenarios. I chose accountancy after really enjoying the work experience I completed at Cole & Co, and I realised it’s not just about numbers; it’s more about problem-solving. That’s what really draws me in.”
Domi’s advice to anyone considering Herefordshire College or the AAT course is simple:
“Just get started and stay consistent with it. The work can be tough and accounting can get complex, but some of what you learn is genuinely fascinating and the opportunities that come with it are amazing. Keep going and don’t let the pressure put you off.”
She admits she surprised herself by choosing accountancy.
“I wasn’t sure AAT would be for me, as I’ve never had a love for numbers. But I’m much better at it than I thought, and I really enjoy it.”
Domi wholeheartedly recommends both the course and the College.
