Student Spotlight: Level 3 T Level Animal Care Student – Courtney

When Courtney progressed from Level 2 to the T Level Animal Care Level 3 course at Holme Lacy College, she admits she felt nervous. Returning after the summer break, joining a new group, and questioning whether she’d chosen the right next step all felt daunting. But those early uncertainties quickly dissolved away, and Courtney now speaks with confidence about how she has grown as a person and found her niche.

“I really, really enjoyed Level 2,” Courtney explains, “and although Level 3 felt challenging at first, I can see how far I have come. I’m still building my confidence, but I’m so much further along than I was before.”

Courtney credits her continuing transformation to the strong support network around her, particularly the dedication of her tutors. Regular one-to-one sessions with tutor Amy have given Courtney the space to talk openly, not just about her studies but about anything on her mind.

“The tutors are amazing. You can tell how passionate they are, and that really rubs off on us,” she says. “Amy and Georgia have both worked as vet nurses, and hearing their stories is so inspiring. Knowing they once stood where we are now makes everything feel achievable.”

Courtney’s hard work has already been recognised. During her Level 2 studies, she won the Land-based Outstanding Student Award, a moment she describes as a real boost to her confidence. Academically, she has discovered a particular passion for anatomy and physiology.

“I find it fascinating how animals’ bodies and systems work,” she says. “It was my favourite subject last year, and I achieved a distinction. Health and welfare is another module I really enjoy.”

Studying in a smaller cohort has also made a big difference. Courtney described how being part of a smaller class has created a calmer, more supportive learning environment where students feel confident speaking up and supporting one another.

Looking ahead, Courtney is keeping her options open. She’s enjoying her work experience and would happily step into employment if the opportunity arose, but university is also a possibility, something her tutors fully believe she is capable of!

“I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet, but I’m not worried about it,” she says. “This course gives you so many transferable skills, not just in animal care, but business skills and confidence too. It opens doors to so many different paths.”

“I wasn’t the smartest at school, but now I’ve found something I really enjoy and want to succeed in,” she reflects. “This feels like the beginning of my journey, not the end.”

She has no hesitation in recommending Holme Lacy College to others:

“It’s smaller than other colleges, and that sense of community makes such a difference. You see the same faces every day, which really helps if confidence is something you struggle with. You make amazing friends and always feel supported.”

Her advice to future students considering animal care?

“Don’t hold yourself back. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. The staff and students here will support you, and you’ll grow more than you expect. You really can achieve the goals you set for yourself.”
