The farm is an autumn block calving dairy farm. We currently milk 250 cows over a large grazing platform. Our cows are housed in the winter months and graze for 9-10 months a year. We calve the herd in a tight 12-week block and rear all our own replacements.
The farm has had significant investment in infrastructure over the last few years to improve facilities for staff and students. We also have access to a small sheep flock that are kept at Walford to give students experience of handling and looking after sheep in general.
My role as Walford Farm Manager is to be responsible for the running of the farm for staff and students. I’m a hands-on Farm Manager and help the team out with all the tasks on a daily basis. I rear all the young stock during the calving period and oversee the running of the dairy herd.
I’m responsible for the financial decisions and all the general decision-making of the farm. I meet with external specialists, including consultants, vets and nutritionists represent the college farm at national conferences, discussing our journey so far.
