Advanced Learner Loan

Level 3 and above

What is an Advanced Learner Loan?

Advanced Learner Loans from the UK government can cover your course fees at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6, providing your course qualifies.

You don’t have to take out a loan, of course – but it means you can improve your knowledge and skills without needing to pay the course fees upfront.

You could also decide to pay part of your course fees with a loan (minimum £300) and part with your own money.

Most learners aged 19 and over, studying at level 3 and above, will qualify for these   loans. It’s easy to apply, your household income is not taken into account and there is no credit check.

How do you qualify?

Whether you qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan depends on your:

  • age – you need to be 19 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age-limit)
  • course – enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 which includes A Levels, Access to HE Diplomas and other Diplomas and Certificates
  • nationality or residency status (see the government’s advanced learner loan eligibility advice).

It will depend on which qualification you wish to study but if you think you may qualify, please contact the Advanced Learner Loan Team within the HLNSC Finance Department on 0800 032 1986 who will be happy to discuss this with you.

How do you apply?

You can apply for a loan once you have been accepted on a relevant course. You can apply from May for courses starting between August the same year and July of the following year.

Read the information on the government’s Advanced Learner Loan page and follow the links to apply online or by post.

Are you considering enrolling on to an Access course?

If you take out a loan for an Access to Higher Education course and progress on to complete a qualifying Higher Education course, your loan for the Access course will be cancelled.

Making the right choice

It’s important you consider your own circumstances and look into all options for paying for your course before choosing to take out a loan. You can get independent financial advice from the Money Helper website.
