About the course

This apprenticeship will give you the skills and knowledge to be responsible for ensuring high quality sustainable crop production. No two days are the same! You will spend one day a week at Holme Lacy college and the rest of your time in the workplace planning and managing the husbandry needs of domestic and/ or wild animals in their care. You will problem solve and deal with issues arising relating to the animal’s welfare. You will ensure that the welfare needs of individual animals are met and that colleagues are appropriately engaged. You will adapt and prepare for the needs of the individual animal, taking accounts of things such as their life stage, condition or behaviour.

Key facts

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for providing care to animals in accordance with appropriate legislation, regulations and organisational policies. They oversee the day to day running of the business, working autonomously, planning and carrying out the daily working schedule. They support or supervise others on their team. They will report and maintain necessary records in relation to the animals, their welfare, and the maintenance of relevant equipment.

Assessment methods

  • The programme is delivered through workplace skills assessment as well as attendance of one day a week in college.

  • At the completion of all on programme learning, apprentices will complete and End Point Assessment and for this standard that will involve a Practical Skills Assessment with Questions and a Professional Discussion underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence.

Entry requirements

  • Suitable employment on or prior to starting the apprenticeship training programme.

  • An appropriate level of Maths and English (assessed prior to apprenticeship start)

  • Apprentices without English or maths (at Level 2 for a Level 3 Apprenticeship or Level 1 for a Level 2 Apprenticeship) must achieve this prior to taking the End Point Assessment).

  • We can support you to achieve the desired level of Maths and English, through functional skills taught sessions which are mandatory to attend as part of your programme (you cannot achieve your apprenticeship without the required level of maths and English).
