Course Content
Calligraphy is recognised as a heritage craft in the UK. The calligraphy classes at HCA are organised to progress over three courses of six sessions. You may choose to book onto just one course or to attend all three over the year. Each term is based upon a different style.
During this course:
For the spring term we will be concentrating on the Italic hand which was widely in use from the early 15th century. Using traditional pens and inks and historical manuscripts on which to base each calligraphy style, students will gradually increase their skills.
Once the principles are understood, projects using your new skills will give you the opportunity of creating, for example, decorative calligraphic panels & books. Using samplers to develop your skills, projects will be introduced with everyone’s abilities in mind. As skills increase so will the complexity of the projects.
Students will be given practical demonstrations on how to space letters, capitals & develop layouts, individual help will be given.
