Student Spotlight: A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths – Joseph

When Joseph joined Ludlow Sixth Form College, he chose a demanding and focused combination of subjects: A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

Now in his final year, Joseph is preparing for his exams with a clear goal in sight, he wants to study Medicine at university. He already holds offers from the University of Birmingham and Cardiff University and is awaiting decisions from Aston University and Keele University.

Joseph is honest about the step up from GCSE to A-level.

“At first it was a bit difficult to get into because the jump was pretty big,” he explains. “But once I started properly revising and staying on top of it, it’s actually okay. It’s not that bad.”

His advice to current Year 11 students reflects that experience:

“It’s not as bad as people make it out to be. So long as you put the work in and focus, it’s manageable.”

Joseph’s interest in healthcare runs in the family. Several relatives work in roles such as nursing, paramedicine and clinical practice. That exposure sparked his interest initially, but the decision to pursue medicine was all his own.

“I did my own research and found that the best thing for me is probably the doctor route,” he says.

Applying for Medicine is famously competitive. Alongside strong predicted grades, Joseph had to prepare for and sit the UCAT admissions test and craft a carefully structured personal statement meeting strict criteria.

He credits the college with providing vital support throughout the process. Staff and fellow students helped him prepare for the UCAT, while his tutor supported him closely with his personal statement.

“There was a lot of strict criteria I had to meet,” he explains. “But they’ve helped a lot, which has been amazing.”

Joseph was particularly keen to highlight that everyone contributes to supporting students in preparing for university interviews, singling out Head of College Linda and former student Archie, who is currently studying medicine at the University of Birmingham, for their invaluable support.

Growing in Confidence

Beyond academic achievement, Joseph feels he has developed significantly on a personal level during his time at college.

“I feel like I’ve become more confident,” he says. “My social skills have improved, and I’ve become more independent.”

Unlike many students, Joseph started college without his existing friendship group, who chose to study elsewhere. Instead, he made the decision to stay closer to home.

“I had to start afresh, but I’ve managed to make my own friend group,” he says. “That’s probably what I’m most proud of, my communication skills have really improved since being here.”

He sums up his experience in two simple words: “Zero regrets.”

Joseph believes one of the college’s biggest strengths is its size.

“It’s not a huge place like some other local colleges, so I think the support on offer is better and more personal, tutors really get to know you and your strengths and your weaknesses,” he explains. “If you ask a question, they understand where you’re coming from.”

He describes the atmosphere as being extremely supportive, with a strong sense of community. Having a timetable that includes independent study time has helped him develop the self-discipline needed for A Level success and will serve as an important skill for university and beyond.

“You have to rely on yourself more,” he says. “The tutors aren’t always making you revise, you’re encouraged to take ownership and to want to do it for yourself.”

Joseph has also embraced opportunities outside of lessons. A Biology trip to the zoo stands out as a particular highlight, and he appreciates the wider enrichment opportunities available, including international trips and creative facilities.

He was pleasantly surprised to discover the college music room, which allowed him to continue exploring his interests beyond science.

With offers for Medicine already in place and his final exams on the horizon, Joseph is now concentrating on finishing his A Levels strongly and preparing for university life.

Looking ahead to the next chapter, Joseph feels confident in the path he has chosen, and, as he puts it, he has “zero regrets” about starting that journey at Ludlow Sixth Form College!
