Keaton is currently completing his Level 3 Diploma in Brickwork, having spent three years at the College progressing through Level 1 and Level 2 Brickwork. After previously attending John Masefield School in Ledbury, Keaton joined the College with a clear determination to succeed in a practical, hands-on career.
A passion for the trade
Keaton’s interest in brickwork began shortly after finishing school, when he spent the summer holidays working alongside a bricklayer.
“I just went for it. I definitely enjoy it! It’s a nice physical job. I prefer being active and busy, so it suits me. I could never imagine myself being stuck in an office all day.”
That early experience confirmed brickwork was the right path, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Supportive tutors and industry-standard facilities
Reflecting on his time at the College, Keaton credits both the tutors and facilities with helping him to thrive in his studies.
“My tutors are nice and friendly. That really helped me to settle in when I first started. Each year, they push you to do the best you can.”
Keaton has benefited from working in well-equipped workshops throughout his studies and has seen the popularity of brickwork grow year on year.
“Herefordshire College has great facilities for brickwork students. Each year, it seems like more people are joining, and the class sizes are growing. It’s great to see the trade is so popular.”
Visiting an open evening and seeing the workshops first-hand played a key role in his decision to enrol.
Building confidence and skills
Keaton also highlights how the College environment positively differs from school.
“You’re treated as a grown-up, and it helps to give you life skills outside of the course.”
His tutors have been instrumental in building his confidence across all three levels.
“Sean was brilliant during my Level 1, really friendly and supportive. Moving into Level 2 and 3, Paul has been the same. They’re always there pushing you to do your best, but not in an overbearing way.”
National success at SkillBuild
Keaton’s hard work and commitment were recognised on a national stage when he reached the top 8 in the SkillBuild 2025 final, competing against the best brickwork students in the country.
His tutor, Paul Stevens, said:
“Keaton has been an outstanding college student who consistently sets high standards and always lives up to expectations. He has become a great example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination. It has been a pleasure to be his teacher.”
The experience has inspired Keaton further, and he has already entered into the SkillBuild qualifiers again for 2026!
“It was a great experience, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully I’ll make it to the final again this year.”

Future plans
Keaton is due to complete his Level 3 Diploma in June/July, and is looking forward to being fully qualified.
“I’ll probably go on to work for a company or onto site. My ultimate goal is to start my own business after gaining more experience.”
Advice for future students
For anyone currently in Year 11 and considering brickwork, Keaton’s advice is simple:
“Come and give it a go, there’s nothing to lose. I’d recommend coming to the open evenings to get a feel for it. If you enjoy it, you can do really well here.”
Life at the College
Outside of his course, Keaton values the inclusive and supportive atmosphere across the College.
“There’s a wide variety of subjects, good facilities, and decent people. It’s a supportive environment and people are always happy to help.”
