About the course

This course is aimed at those who wish to learn more about the basics of digital photography. These skills and processes involve thinking about how digital photography works.The course is suitable for those using a DLSR camera or android smartphone (iphone users are welcome to enrol, though there will be less technical information provided). The course will explore the many ways in which the practice of photographs can be approached, investigated, edited and displayed in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Topics covered will include:

  • How to make digital photographs;

  • How to edit digital photographs;

  • How to make a series of digital photographs;

  • How to crop digital photographs;

Please note that some of the 10 sessions will take place outdoors and off site. Learners will need to make their own way to these alternative venues.

  • How to distort digital photographs.

The first 5 sessions will be classroom based; the last 3 sessions will be practical (please see details further below).

Why choose us

Gemma Moore is a British socially engaged artist based in the West Midlands. Her latest projects have involved working with people living with dementia on a large-scale project called Durational Drawing, which has included making and documenting the project’s process. Other photographic bodies of work include the Feminist Persona Series (2021) which has won several awards, including the Sidney Nolan Trust Residency Award (2021) and The Mike Holland Award upon commencing her Masters Degree studies in Fine Art at the Birmingham School of Art. Her main photographic interests are the following – abstract, black and white, feminist performance photography and social documentary photography.

Venue: Theory sessions take place at our Folly Lane Campus, Hereford HR1 1LS; practical sessions take place on the college site or at an alternative venue as below:

Week 6: Walk around Hereford City Centre

Week 7: Walk around the college site and workshops

Week 8: Bartonsham Meadow

Learners will need to make their own way to the off site venues.
