Rugby: HLNSC v Shrewsbury Colleges Group
This week, HLNSC rugby team played their first 15 a-side opposition in two decades versus Shrewsbury Colleges Group.
HLNSC fought hard to get into the 2nd half, when Jon Latchford (Sport) made a blistering break, evading 5 players and diving over the line to score. 29 – 5.
The team regained possession when Leon Scotford (Public Services) made a strong run through the middle of the pitch. He scored! 29 – 10.
Shrewsbury scored two tries, with conversions in the 2nd half. HLNSC fought back! Quick ball by Ollie Murray (Carpentry), allowed Spencer Savory (Public Services) to orchestrate the backs, leading to a sublime try in the corner by Owain Ridgeway-Sanderson (Electrical and Plumbing).
There were strong performances from many players, including three from Ludlow Sixth Form College and the team did themselves proud, finishing 15 – 44 against an academy side.
The opposition named Spencer as our man of the match. Shrewsbury coach Dale Smallman praised our team for their effort and told them that they’re being talked about on a national level!
HLNSC are the only NEW college team to start-up this year, and the RFU are supporting our growth. Our team will now be discussed at Twickenham, highlighting the positive impacts at grassroots level our college is having on the game.
A big accolade indeed, keep up the great work!
